La Fortuna/Arenal🌋

Volcanos, hot springs, and spa's oh my!

La Fortuna is a popular destination in Costa Rica during the months of November through April. It is the best time of year to view the volcano from all around. That said I have been there for rainy season and had the most spectacular time! Arenal hosts many different attractions. From atv's, natural hot springs, ziplining, whitewater rafting and more. The Volcano wasn't very visible due to overlaying fog but with so many other things to see and do it made for a great trip. Rainy season is considered the to be the months of June through October and is less crowded and usually more affordable.

Even though the Volcano isn't visible all year the hot springs stay hot during all seasons. Since we went in July and it rained, I especially enjoyed hanging out in the hot springs which included a swim up bar. And atving in the mud was so much fun.

There is no hot spring shortage, you will have so many options and finding your own pool is normally easy. If you are looking for a more natural approach Rio Chollin is a great place, it is free! The temperature can range past boiling point. So be sure to be safe if venturing off and finding your own hot spring.

Then there are the hot springs resorts with man made and natural pools with slides, pool bars, and spas. You can stay at one of the resorts which includes access to the hot springs or purchase day passes. Day passes range from $30 to over $100.

Tours-

With so much to do, it may take multiple trips to the area. It's always better to plan ahead of time prices do not change but fill up quick, particularly in high season. Hanging bridges is a good place to experience a bunch of things in one location. Packages range approximately $80 pp to $200 usd depending what you want to do or see. Most tours include a lunch with price of tour and always good to ask. These activities have hanging bridges, water fall, and getting close to the Volcano. Some tours have a zipline, and hike to add to it. If you don't want to do all those all at once you can also just do one thing at a time which will cost less buying all the tours at once.

There's multiple atv tours that take you closer to the Volcano, and I really enjoyed that one.

Arenal has some of the best white water rafting in Costa Rica, class from 2 and as high as 5.

If you are looking to do something more chill there is a chocolate tour. Costa Rica is known for their cacao trees. It's a exclusive experience. You will see the entire process from seed, tree, beans and manufacturing of chocolate and helping make the chocolate yourself. This tour is only a couple hours so it won't take up your whole day.

-Travel to Arenal

I took a bus from San Jose to La Fortuna then a short bus ride from La Fortuna to Arenal. I took a red cab to the hotel and back. Using the hotel for transportation once there. It was so convenient and inexpensive to travel. You can also rent a car, or take a Sansa regional flight.
