Exchanging money into the Costa Rican currency Colonies, will save you money. Because the rate is different; you may end up paying more for items. A common practice among locals is to round up the price using an inflated exchange rate.


Exchanging currency before leaving for Costa Rica is common. However, if you have a little extra time and are on a budget one of the best places to exchange money the bank or a credit union (coopealianza). They are located in larger cities like San Jose. Each of these places will give the most current exchange rate. Be sure to use Google to make sure you are getting the correct exchange


Cash is a must have! High credit card fees and lack of reliable infrastructure may be reasons some places do not except credit cards. Paying cash for your stays restaurants and tours can save you money. Having a plan of what you are going to do will give you an idea on how much cash you will need.


Be sure to get enough cash, the power may be out in some areas like the rain Forrest after a big storm. ATMs are located in some places but not all towns have them or are not easily found. Expect a high convienence charge some as high as 13%.


Most US citizens make this common mistake. It is important to know all tips at restaurants and bars are included on the check. An additional tip of course is always appreciated however, it is not necessary.

Fun fact! Since 1896 the unit of currency in Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colon. Before the colon, the currency was peso.
